Our Research

We are working in collaboration with a number of universities and sports organisations to address the current lack of research surrounding neurodiversity in sport.

The ethicality of our research collaborations is of vital importance to us and we are determined to ensure the needs and interests of neurodivergent people remain our foremost concern.

We use a combination of research findings, practitioner perspectives and lived experience to inform our resources and services.

RESEARCH

Our combined research project in collaboration with the University of Reading Autism Research Centre aims to establish whether young elite athletes with Autistic traits self-select certain sports, and what their experiences are like within their respective sports. We hope that the insight gained will inform us as to the neuroinclusivity of various sporting environments. This information will allow us to focus our efforts most effectively.

Where neurodiversity in sport is concerned, we also support individual MSc and PhD students with their research projects.

When new projects arise, we will advertise them below - take a look as you may be able to help!

EXPLORING THE STRESSORS EXPERIENCED BY NEURODIVERGENT ATHLETES

"We (Dr Sam Wood, Dr Ben Marshall, and Dr Greg Wood) are researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport. We are interested in a wide variety of issues and concepts within sport psychology. In this specific project we are interested in exploring the stress that neurodiverse athletes face when participating in sport – both in training and competition."

If you are a neurodivergent athlete interested in participating, or if you would like to ask any questions about the project, contact Dr Sam Wood via email.

ND ATHLETE'S PERSPECTIVE: ELITE SPORT

Earlier this year, we supported Anita Jones with her MSc thesis, titled “An Athlete’s Perspective: How can neurodiversity in Elite Sport best be supported by organisations and key stakeholders”.

Anita is passionate about helping organisations understand, from an athlete’s point of view, the best way to create an environment where neurodivergent athletes can thrive.

Anita will soon be publishing her findings, and once she does, we will upload a link here. In the meantime, you can contact her via email or WhatsApp with any questions.
