Ultra Cycling

NdS AMBASSADOR - FIONA SHORTEN .

Introduction

We’re proud to introduce Fiona Shorten as a Neurodiverse Sport Ambassador. Fiona is an ultra-endurance cyclist and neurodivergent advocate who uses long-distance riding—events ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 km—as a powerful form of expression, growth, and awareness.

Diagnosed with autism and traits of ADHD, Fiona discovered the freedom and focus of ultra cycling after years of misdiagnosis and masking. In just one year, she went from finishing last in her first race to becoming the first woman to cross the line at the 790km UBS 2024. She now uses her voice to highlight autism in women, challenge stereotypes, and create space for others to thrive—at their own pace.

Interests & Fun Facts

“I love being in nature—especially long summer walks.

I play the piano for myself and find it relaxing.

I return to knitting as a calming, mindful activity when I need to slow down.

I own around 500 books, which brings joy (and some clutter!) to my flat.

My earliest memory of cycling is falling into a pond because I couldn’t steer—thankfully, I’ve improved since!

I celebrate achievements—big or small—by treating myself, or simply sharing the moment with people who understand its meaning.”

Bio

About Me

“Hi, I’m Fiona Shorten, a neurodiverse cyclist and ultra-endurance athlete passionate about using cycling as a platform for autism awareness—especially in women. I’ve completed multi-day cycling events, including UBS and VIA, and continue to push myself further each year. The bike has become a space where I can be fully myself—free from masking and social pressure.”

Neurodiversity & Self-Understanding

“After a late autism diagnosis in my 30s, everything began to make sense. Years of misdiagnosis and antidepressant use were finally replaced with self-understanding and the freedom of cycling. I came off all medication by the end of 2023 and found strength, resilience, and community through ultra-distance riding.

I’m dedicated to showing others that sport can be a vehicle for personal growth, healing, and connection—”

Through storytelling and advocacy, I hope to inspire inclusivity, awareness, and change in the world of endurance sport and beyond.
